Trustees

Carolynn MacAllister, DVM - Chair
Carolynn MacAllister is the Director of Continuing Education and Extension at Oklahoma State University Center for Veterinary Health Sciences, where she works closely with approximately 90 veterinarians, residents, interns, and faculty. A native of Lake Jackson, Texas, she earned her veterinary medicine degree from Texas A&M.

Blair Hollowell, DVM – Vice Chair
Dr. Hollowell has practiced small animal veterinary medicine since graduating from Tuskegee University in 1998. She owns two small animal practices and a canine rehabilitation practice in Virginia Beach. As a member of the National Veterinary Response Team, she has been deployed to assist victims of hurricanes.

Paula Rode, DVM – Secretary/Treasurer
Dr. Paula Rode is a small animal practitioner and owner of a two-doctor practice in Chelsea, Michigan. She received her veterinary degree from Michigan State University's College of Veterinary Medicine in 1988. As an active board member and former president of the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association, Dr. Rode has enjoyed small animal practice as well as organized veterinary medicine.

Jay C. Brekke, DVM
Jay C. Brekke practices veterinary medicine at Brekke Veterinary Clinic in Castle Rock, Colorado. A native of Colorado, Dr. Brekke earned his doctorate degree in veterinary medicine from Colorado State University in 2013. Dr. Brekke serves on the board of Nature's Educators, a non-profit wildlife rescue organization.

David E. Granstrom, DVM, PHD, DACVM
Dr. Granstrom is the Associate Executive Vice President and Chief Accreditation and Certification Officer of the AVMA. He received DVM and PhD degrees from the College of Veterinary Medicine, Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kansas in 1978 and 1988 respectively. He is a Charter Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiology (parasitology). In addition to serving as Liaison-Trustee on the AVMA LIFE Board of Trustees, he serves on the AVMA Professional Liability Insurance Trust (PLIT) Board of Trustees.

Joe Howell, DVM
Dr. Joe Howell served as President of the AVMA from 2002 to 2003. He is a companion animal practitioner and former owner of the Britton Road Veterinary Clinic in Oklahoma City. He has also been on faculty at OSU Veterinary School as Interim Director of Continuing Education.

Dwight D. King, DVM
Dwight D. King practices veterinary medicine at K-MANA, LLC., a ranch management practice. He has been an AVMA LIFE Trustee since 2005. A native of Wharton, Texas, Dr. King earned his degree in veterinary medicine from Texas A&M University in 1970.

Dave Koncal, DVM
Dr. Koncal graduated from The Ohio State University in 1971 and practiced companion animal medicine in the Cleveland/Akron area until 2015, when he sold his practice and retired. He served as president of the Ohio and Cleveland Veterinary Medical Associations, and served the AVMA as a member of the Public Relations/Communications Council. Dr. Koncal served on the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board.

Martha O'Rourke, DVM
Martha O’Rourke practices at Small Animal Veterinary Associates, a three-veterinarian small animal practice where she specializes in ophthalmology and soft tissue surgery. An American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (ABVP) certified Canine & Feline Diplomate, Dr. O’Rourke graduated with a degree in veterinary medicine from Kansas State University.

Renee Schmid, DVM
Renee Schmid is a small animal practitioner and staff veterinarian for an international animal poison control center. She received her veterinary degree from Kansas State University in 2001. Dr. Schmid became involved in organized veterinary medicine during her pre-veterinary curriculum and has continued that involvement ever since. She has enjoyed serving as an officer on local and state VMAs, as well as numerous local and university organizations.

AVMA LIFE Staff

Libby Wallace, CEO AVMA LIFE
Libby Wallace joined AVMA LIFE on December 3, 2007 as Chief Executive Officer. In her role, Libby is responsible for the business operations of the Trust. She works closely with the Trustees and business partners to develop and implement strategic plans, which provide an array of personal lines of insurance products for veterinarians. Libby also represents AVMA LIFE at various veterinary conventions and colleges of veterinary medicine.

Before joining AVMA LIFE, Libby served as Vice President of National Accounts at Coventry Health Care, where she oversaw the account management of multiple large employer plans, including several Fortune 500 companies.

Libby graduated from the University of Illinois with a Bachelor of Science in Applied Life Studies.


Felicia Watson, Trust Representative
Felicia Watson joined AVMA LIFE in 2013. In her role, Felicia focuses on the operational aspects of the Trust and the coordination of business partner activities. Felicia has over twenty years of experience in the insurance industry working with for-profit, non-profit, and third-party administrator (TPA) organizations. Before joining AVMA LIFE, Felicia worked in the human resources department of the AVMA as Human Resources Generalist.

Felicia graduated from Northern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a minor in Business Administration. Felicia also holds a Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification.


Dr. Katrina Geitner, Trust Representative
Dr. Geitner joined AVMA LIFE in March 2016, as Trust Representative for Student Services. In her role, Dr. Geitner focuses on outreach and education to the students of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Geitner earned her veterinary degree from Iowa State University in 1991 and practiced small animal medicine until 2015. She had been an associate, practice owner, and relief veterinarian. She remains active in her state association by sitting on the Executive Board of the WVMA.
